This past weekend I was in Paso Robles, California for a women’s fitness vacation that included morning workouts, wine tasting, yoga on the beach, hiking through vineyards, a castle tour and delicious dinners with new friends. I know, I probably sound spoiled and if you follow me on Instagram you saw pictures of my amazing experience. However taking the time to rest, relax and recharge does not mean I am spoiled, it is something I NEED to do for myself on a regular basis, not only for my physical health but for my mental/emotional health too. My family deserves a well rested, healthy mom!
Since I can’t really hop on a plane and take a girls weekend every month (I wish), I have found ways to take care of myself at home in Dallas. This includes eating healthy and well balanced meals, getting regular exercise during the week, taking at least one rest day on the weekend and getting a massage at least once a month.
About a month ago, Massage Envy Spa offered to let me try their massage service and I happily accepted since I am currently training for the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon and have been running up to 10 miles on the weekends. *Disclaimer: Massage Envy Spa offered me a free massage in exchange for a review of their services, however all opinions expressed are my own.
It was simple to make the initial appointment, I just checked out their website, found the nearest location then gave them a call. I choose a Saturday morning so I could get my massage right after my long run and was offered an appointment for the next weekend. A day or two before the appointment, they called to remind me about my appointment and suggested I arrive about 15 minutes early to fill out my paperwork. Once I arrived that Saturday, the lady behind the front desk offered to let me sit in the quiet room while I filled out a questionnaire that included some basic medical history, location of my pain and what level of pressure I wanted during my massage. My shoulders, upper back and hamstrings are my problem areas, so I listed those on the form and chose moderate to firm pressure.
A few minutes later, my scheduled therapist came to greet me and led me down the hallway to one of treatment rooms. She went over my paperwork, asked me questions about my areas of concerns and told me I could get undressed to my comfort level after she left the room. I undressed to my underwear then slipped under the sheet on the massage table. It seemed to take at least five minutes for her to return, which I found unusual, but since I was semi-naked I just laid on the bed and tried to relax. Unfortunately, there happened to be construction taking place next door so I heard hammering, banging and power saws right on the other side of the wall of my treatment room. The went on the entire hour of my massage, although once my therapist returned she did turn up the music to try to drown out the noise.
Communicating with your therapist is very important during your massage. Although they should ask you at the beginning if the pressure is comfortable, it is your responsibility to let them know at any time if it is painful or if you want more pressure. Since I spend 40+ hours at a desk on the computer each week, I carry of lot of tightness in my shoulders and upper back so I prefer more firm pressure to relieve my stress. Initially I wanted a deep tissue massage but once the therapist started my treatment I decided to stick with more moderate pressure. In just under an hour, I received a full body sweedish massage and left feeling very relaxed. My only complaint was the construction next door, which I understand that Massage Envy was not able to control, but I would have preferred a room further away from the noise.
