There are very few kitchen products that I can claim have changed my life for the better. Double ovens, my stand mixer and high quality kitchen knives all come to mind, but if I had to pick just one product the Blendtec blender would be at the very top of that list. Most blenders I have owned have failed to chop or crush ice completely, so I always ended up with chunks of frozen banana or ice in my smoothies. Then about a week ago Blendtec sent me their Total Blender Classic Wildside , valued at $455, to test in my own kitchen.
When I first took it out of the box, my husband was skeptical. He looked at the blade assembly and wondered aloud how it was going to make a difference in our shakes and smoothies. However in the past week, I have heard the phrase “I Love this Blender!” come out of my husband’s mouth about 5 times a day as he whips up frozen margaritas, fruit smoothies and protein shakes. “No chunks of ice!” he exclaims every times he pours a drink.
My favorite feature is the one button multiple blend cycles, which takes the guess-work out of how long and what speed I need to use. From milkshakes, to smoothies, to soup or juice, the simple buttons on the front of the blender make it easy. My second favorite feature is the recipe book, Fresh Blends, that comes with the Blendtec Classic Wildside blender, which I have been using everyday as inspiration.
To jump-start my smoothie making spree, Stonyfield also sent me samples of their new organic Blends yogurt line. The thicker, creamier Blends yogurt is a sweet, delicious change from my usual Oikos Greek yogurt. The Blends line is filled with fresh fruit and fruit purees that almost makes me feel like I am eating dessert. They are packed with calcium and protein too but beware of the sugar content. You do not need to add additional fruit or sweeteners to this yogurt, it is sweet enough on its own. That is why I think the Blends yogurt line is the perfect ingredient base for protein smoothies.
After boot camp on Wednesday morning, I whipped up a protein smoothie for breakfast that I drank in the car on the way to work. In my blender I layered one carton of fat-free Blueberry Blends yogurt, 1/2 cup of low-fat milk, one scoop of protein powder, 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1 frozen banana and 1 cup of ice. In less than 1 minute, I had a perfectly blended breakfast smoothie in my hand.
BlueBerry Banana Oat Protein Smoothie
Servings: 1 large smoothie
- 6 ounce carton of Blueberry Blends yogurt
- 1/2 cup low-fat milk (or almond milk)
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 1/4 cup rolled oats
- 1 frozen banana (cut in slices before freezing)
- 1 cup ice
Layer ingredients in your blender and cover with the lid. Blend for approximately 40 seconds. Pour into glass and enjoy!
