Beat the Boredom Treadmill Workout

by Stephanie on January 17, 2013

We are just over two weeks into the New Year, so how are your New Year’s Resolutions (NYR) holding up?  If you are having trouble sticking to them, then you are not alone.  Apparently January 17th is the most common day for people to give up on their NYR, so this date has been named ”Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day.”

Today I was having trouble getting motivated my for lunchtime run.  With work all week, #minibliss at the Gaylord on Monday night, a four mile run at lunch on Tuesday, starting back at bible study on Tuesday night and boot camp on Wednesday morning, all I really wanted to do at lunch today was ANYTHING… but go to the gym.

However with a 15K on my race calendar in the next three weeks, I knew that I needed to run today.  My lunchtime workout was also already on my exercise schedule and I could not come up with a reason that I had to miss, so I started looking for some motivation.  Whenever I need to get motived for my workouts, I check my pinterest Fitness board or my favorite fitness pages on Facebook like FitFluential, Fit Chicks, My Think Fit and Body Postive.

Never Regret going for a run

Finally, I decided to just go to the gym and run for 2 miles.  Two miles sounded long enough to be considered a workout but short enough to accommodate my lack of motivation.  So I got on the treadmill, turned on my favorite mix from www.RockMyRun.com called Haulin’ Sass and started to warm-up.  Then a funny thing happened…

As soon as the music came on and I started to run, I found my motivation!  Instead of boring, long treadmill run, I decided to kick it up a notch and work on some speedwork.  I started my doing 1/4 mile intervals (which is equal to one lap around a track) at increasing speed, followed by a 1/4 mile at a recovery speed.  For the past few months,  I have only been focused on increasing my distance base so it felt incredible to run fast today.  Even better my workout seemed to fly by, not only because I was running faster but because I kept changing my pace every few minutes.

So if you are stuck in your same, boring treadmill routine, I challenge you to try this fast and fun interval workout the next time you are at the gym.  And stay motivated my friends, don’t let “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day” catch up to you!
